Biennale de Belleville 2012
Waterfalls of Iguazu, Brasilia, Angel Kalenberg, 1977, copyright Centre Pompidou, Bibliothèque Kandinsky

Opening Saturday, 15 September 2012, 6 until 9 pm

A proposition by Hélène Meisel, at the invitation of Claire Moulène
Exhibition in the frame of the second edition of the Biennale de Belleville, September 15 – 21 October 2012

This proposition revisits the geography of the defunct Biennale de Paris (1959-1985) and explores its ambition to expand the map of the art world. « Young, interdisciplinary and international » : the biennial wanted to differ from Venice and Kassel by its experimental and prospective vocation. Although more than forty countries have participated, the effort of internationalization was sometimes problematic, because international relations often dictated cultural diplomacy : revolutions, takeovers and dictatorships prevented some collaborations. In addition to these political obstacles came the lack of visibility of some art scenes, untouched by the cosmopolitanism of international style. Despite attempts to rebalance, 80% of some 7000 participants will be Western, French for third. The three objects reconstituted for this exhibition - artworks and documents - will address various forms of travel, from journey to exile : the anthropological exploration (Ángel Kalenberg), the avant-garde offensive or emergency evacuation (Tamàs St . Auby) and the « mapping essay » (office abc + Sarah Kremer).

In the framework of the exhibition:
4 October 2012, 7- 8.30 pm, at café au lit
11 October, 8-9.30 pm, at Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers

Latin America in 240 slides, lecture
Slideshow reactivation by Camila Bechelany, Hélène Meisel and Annabela Tournon

This lecture reactivates a visual device kept in storage for the last 35 years and stored in the Kandinsky Library (Centre Pompidou, Paris) : 240 slides collected in 1977 by the Uruguayan curator Ángel Kalenberg for the 10th Biennale de Paris, and projected at Palais de Tokyo in the section dedicated to Latin America. Shown three by three, images formed combinations in the spririt of " synchronic pluralities ", suggesting survivals and disjunctions of a civilization : from the ruins of Teotihuacan to the Brasilia built by Niemeyer, from Jesuit baroque to Mexican muralism ...
With the support of the Kandinsky Library (Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris), the Archives de la critique d’art (Rennes) and Ecole nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Lyon (Print studio). In collaboration with Camila Bechelany & Annabela Tournon, office abc & Sarah Kremer, Camille Platevoet & Arnaud Daffos.

Orange Rouge

Friday, may 11, 2012 from 6 until 9 p.m.

Orange Rouge is a project involving special needed adolescents and artists, who are invited to create a work of art with them. Perplexe - Le cahier de l’Orange Rouge stems from this very fertile activity. It raises the questions involved with creation in alternative territories, shares projects and invites an artist to propose a detachable work.
The soirée café au lit expérience(s) showcases Maxime Thieffine’s artwork, the artist invited for the magazine project. We will also have a chat with art theory writer Simone Frangi, live from Italy, and much more...

Thierry Costesèque

Monday, April 2nd 2012, from 6 to 9 p. m.

Soirée of interventions by Thierry Costesèque
If, in the history of art, it was the space of the picture that served as representation of urban space, by his interventions, Thierry Costesèque arrives to turn this perception: now, it is the city which becomes a picture. This effect gives the spectator the opportunity to understand their place in the picture as inherent part of an imaginary in constant evolution.

Wednesday, september 13 from 6 pm until midnight, café au lit will open its forth exhibition, an in-situ work by Berlin-based painter Gabriele Basch. In addition to her painted canvasses, Basch creates cut paper pieces and wall drawings that expand the gallery into an exuberant, imaginative space. June 11th: Opening reception for our summer project "Nackt - nu - naked" (Stéphane Belzère)

This summer, before its next big exhibition of an in-situ work by Gabriele Basch, café au lit is taking a suggestion from painter Stéphane Belzère, whose work was previously featured in an exhibition at the original café au lit. Recently, in the process of creating several large canvases, Belzère produced small acetate cutouts – silhouettes of people and other figures in his formal vocabulary. In separating the figures from the surface of the image and exhibiting them "naked" within the four walls of the apartment, they have been given a new autonomy and intimacy. A perfect reflection of café au lit's small exhibition space. Belzères figures will populate the walls of the apartment and keep our guests company until September 13th.
The opening reception will take place in tandem with the gallery opening "En Voyage" at Le Plateau as part of the cooperation "Paris-Est".

January 29th, 11 am - 6 pm: closing reception of the exhibition: Corina Bezzola - Räume / espaces / spaces

"I have to tell you that we did appreciate the stay very very much!!!!" – that's only one of many people's reactions who lived together with Corina Bezzola's exhibition by renting café au lit. Now you have one last chance to visit the exhibition and find out by yourself how amazing Bezzola's artworks are. The Swiss artist's work is performance-based: armed with adhesive tape, Bezzola explores private homes and artists' studios, isolating individual and normally overlooked characteristics of the space. Her photographs are both a documentation of her explorations and a reconstruction of the physical spaces she explores.

A Successful Opening

Around 200 visitors stopped by during the grand opening of café au lit to acquaint themselves with the newest venue for contemporary art in the Mouzaïa district of Paris. The overwhelming positive feedback to the realization of Didier Faustino's architectural project and Jochem Lempert's photographs gave us a lot of enthusiasm for our ongoing work. In addition to renting café au lit, we will also devote ourselves to planning several micro-events (discussion evenings, performances, presentations, etc ...) which will take place in the apartment.
